AVTA Recognized By Teamsters For Safety Efforts During COVID-19 Pandemic
The Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) leadership is acutely aware that many residents of the AV community consider AVTA’s transit services essential to their daily lives. AVTA’s leadership is dedicated to the health and safety of both their riders and employees. During this time of national crisis, AVTA’s commitment has become even more important to ensure that operations continue as smoothly as possible.
This week, Teamsters Local 848 recognized the AVTA Board of Directors, executive management, and entire staff at AVTA for their considerable efforts to care for the frontline workers in the transit industry.
“I want to commend Martin Tompkins, Macy Neshati, Chairman Marvin Crist, everyone on the Board of AVTA, and the staff of AVTA, for taking care of the Transdev workforce during this tragic pandemic crisis,” stated Eric Tate, Secretary Treasurer of the Teamsters Local 848. “I will be bragging to all the transit agencies about how AVTA stepped up for its frontline responders in the transit industry in Lancaster and Palmdale.”
AVTA has taken deliberate steps to promote a healthy environment for the AVTA bus operators, mechanics, dispatchers, road supervisors, utility, and all office staff. They increased the frequency of cleaning procedures, communicated with employees to address concerns and equipment needs, established cleaning and disinfecting teams at the transportation centers, and instituted rear door boardings.
“AVTA understands the trust our community has placed in us and we are committed to taking steps to help our riders and employees have a healthy transit experience,” stated AVTA Board Chairman Marvin Crist.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided detailed recommendations for healthy habits to prevent the spreading of flu viruses, including COVID-19 (the coronavirus). These habits can be summarized in these three points:
AVTA provides local, commuter and dial-a-ride service to a population of more than 450,000 residents in the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale as well as the unincorporated portions of northern Los Angeles County. Its total service area covers 1,200 square miles and it is bounded by the Kern County line to the north, the San Bernardino County line to the east, the Angeles National Forest to the south, and Interstate 5 to the West.

- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
