Riding the Bus

Before you board any bus, make sure it's the one going where you want to go! Many of our stops are served by more than one route so be sure the approaching bus is the one you want to ride. Each AVTA bus is equipped with two destination signs: one above the windshield, and one on the curbside of the bus. These signs identify the route (by number) and its destination (e.g. 5: Quartz Hill).

Getting On the Bus

If you're using a TAP card, simply tap the card to the card reader. If you're using cash, our drivers cannot make change, please have your exact fare ready and place it in the farebox. All persons riding the bus must be fully clothed including shoes and a shirt. Take a seat as quickly as you can and for your safety, please stay seated at all times. Each bus has seating for the elderly or disabled located near the front. Passengers seated in these areas are urged to give up their seats when requested. Wheelchair passengers must board through the front door. The front steps of each bus can be lowered for passengers who have difficulty boarding.

Now that you're on the bus, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Getting Off the Bus

When the bus is approaching your destination, pull the bell cord located above the windows to let the driver know you wish to get off. Please remain seated until the bus has stopped and after you exit, stand to the side of the road or on the sidewalk until the bus pulls away. For your safety, do not cross in front of the bus! All passengers are encouraged to exit through the rear door of the bus.

Bus Stops

All bus stops are marked with a sign that identifies the route or routes serving that stop. Many stops include shelters. For your safety, drivers stop only at designated AVTA bus stops. Drivers will stop near an intersection only where it's safe to pick up or discharge passengers. A bus stopped in traffic will not allow passengers to enter or exit until it has passed through the intersection.

When catching a bus, we suggest that you be at the bus stop at least five (5) minutes early.

Lost and Found

If you leave an item on the bus please call AVTA at (661) 945-9445 ext 202 as soon as possible. Tell us what route and bus you were on, and the time and location when you left the bus. You'll be asked to provide a description of the lost item and a phone number where we may contact you. All lost items are returned to our administrative office for safekeeping for up to 30 days. AVTA is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged articles.

Bikes on the Bus

All AVTA transit buses have bicycle racks on them. Please have your bicycle ready to load as the bus approaches. Be sure to tell the driver that you'll be loading your bicycle. For safety reasons, the driver cannot get off the bus to help you. Remember, never walk or stand in front of oncoming traffic while loading or unloading your bike.

When you're ready to get off the bus, tell the driver you need to unload your bicycle and use the front door to exit the bus.

Behavior Policy

AVTA maintains a zero tolerance policy for acts or comments that could be perceived as threatening to another customer or the bus driver. If you see anything suspicious, report it to your driver immediately. AVTA will contact the Sheriff’s Department for assistance if necessary.

AVTA appreciates your cooperation by observing these few common courtesies:
  • Be courteous to your driver and other riders. Smiles are free on AVTA buses.
  • Please do not smoke, eat, or drink on the bus.
  • Place large packages (no more than three packages) under your seat. All items must be kept clear of the aisle.
  • Strollers, walking aids, and carts must be collapsed. Please do this before getting on the bus, if you can.
  • We love pets, but cannot allow them on the bus. Service animals trained to assist persons with disabilities are welcome, but remember: you, the owner, are responsible for your service animal while on the bus.
  • Please keep front seats available for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
